County reassessment underway

Vision employees are shown here during training activities for upcoming site visits.
Trained staffers from Vision Government Solutions have begun their visits to thousands of properties across the Potter County to re-establish their market value on the county’s assessment rolls. Results of the countywide reassessment will be used as the basis for school district, municipal and county real estate taxes starting in 2029.
Property owners will be able to review preliminary findings of the reassessment with Vision representatives and request changes. If they are dissatisfied with the results, they can file a formal appeal. Finally, taxpayers will have the option of having their assessment changed through litigation.
Vision staff will be available at the Gunzburger Building for one-on-one discussions and will be attending township and borough meetings upon request.
In a news release, the Potter County Commissioners said: “Current property values were established in 1975-76. The reassessment to reflect changes in market conditions since that time. The purpose is not to raise taxes, but rather to create an equitable distribution of the tax burden. An analysis of countywide reassessments dating back many years across Pennsylvania suggests that roughly one-third of property owners will see a decrease in taxes, one-third will stay about the same, and one-third will see an increase.”
Once the work is complete, the county’s paper-based assessment records will be digitized and be more accessible to the public.
